Introduction of Mt. Huangshan
Mt. Huangshan is located in Huangshan City, Anhui Province of China.
Mt. Huangshan extends 40km from south to north and 30km from east to west. Its conservation area is about 490 square kilometres with highlights of 160.6km2 including scenic area divisions of Hot Spring, Jade Screen, North Sea, Pine Valley, Cloud Valley and Fishing Bridge. It is bristled with peaks in a daunting height or with a graceful charm, among which there are 88 peaks over a thousand meters above sea level, including such three major peaks as Lotus Peak (the highest with 1864.8m above sea level), Celestial Capital Peak and Bright Summit.
Since 1980s, Mt. Huangshan has been rated successively as National Scenic Spot, National Civilized Scenic Spot, AAAAA Tourist Attraction, National Geopark and National Forest Park. In 1985, Mt. Huangshan was selected to be one of "the top ten scenic areas in China". In 2005, Mt. Huangshan was selected as one of "China's Ten Most Beautiful Mountains".
In 2010, Mt. Huangshan was selected as one of “Top 10 Best Destiantions In China”.
The beauty of Mt. Huangshan is the free but sincere expression of Nature and the cultural symbol of Chinese nation. Whether its masculinity in loftiness and forcefulness or its feminine charm in handsomeness and gracefulness, whether its romance in well-arranged proportion and distribution or its sanctity in purity and whiteness from covering snow, the beauty of Mt. Huangshan contains the rich cultural deposits from classical poems and ideological and artistic conception of Chinese landscape paintings.
With granite formation characterized in geoscience by vertical jointing development with crisscrossing crevices, the mountains are of a landscape in abruptness and overlaps or in erosion and mistiness. The orogeny through millions of long years makes up the configuration of a forest of peaks which is full of visual impact and spirit-stirring power.
As the only mountainous scenic spot among the Top Ten Scenic Spots in China, Mt. Huangshan gains its reputation of "No. 1 Mountain under Heaven" with its "Five Wonders" of oddly-shaped pines, grotesque rocks, sea of clouds, hot springs and the snow scenery. Under its distinctive landscapes, it grows to be a condensed but massive totem for natural beauty through great changes of time and nature and baptism of comprehensive civilization. This is where the cultural kernel of Chinese "Mt. Huangshan Complex" lies.
In 2009, "China Comment" (the most influential current politics magazine in China) praised Mt. Huangshan to be the classic representative of Chinese landscape, the important symbol of the Chinese nation, the brand and business card of Chinese tourism industry.
For thousands of years, Mt. Huangshan is in the long standing cultural association with the kaleidoscopic world.
It is said that in Mt. Huangshan, once called "Mt. Yishan" in an early ancient time, Emperor Huang, the cultural primogenitor of Chinese nation, was immortalized. Hence, Emperor Xuanzong (Li Longji by the name) in Tang Dynasty gave his imperial order in 747AD to rename it Mt. Huangshan implying Emperor Huang's mountains. From then on, a generation after another have been appreciating its magnificent spectacles and passing down its legendary tales. It is easily understood from the retrieval of Mt. Huangshan's history of tourism and civilization that Mt. Huangshan is a flash freeze frame of Chinese landscape culture in the 16th century,
Among all the tourist attractions in the world, Mt. Huangshan in Huizhou has no equal. Once on the top, one can find no match to its beauty, which is a real marvel! 400 years ago, Xu Xiake, the saint traveler, wrote down these widely eulogized advertising sentences after climbing onto the top of "colorfully painted Lotus Peak" (the highest peak) and "shouting as joyfully as ready to dance". From then on, mass tourists have been inspired with the longing for visiting Mt. Huangshan by the following popular "Xu's Quotation": "Having visited the five sacred mountains, I find no other mountains worth seeing; having returned from Mt. Huangshan, however, I find even the five sacred unworthy of my visit."
For centuries, countless poems and songs and paintings are describing and praising Mt. Huangshan, including those by Jianjiang, Shitao and Meiqing in the ending years of Ming Dynasty and beginning years of Qing Dynasty, who, being rooted in Mt. Huangshan and dedicated in their appreciation and description of its charm, developed "Huangshan Painting School", a new style of their own on the basis of Chinese traditional landscape paintings. Consequently, Mt. Huangshan has become the "cradle" of Chinese landscape painting art.
Huang Binhong, Wang Caibai, Liu Haisu and Li Keran in the modern times learned thoroughly the essence of Huangshan Painting School whose painters admire Mt. Huangshan as their teacher and their artistic resource. Liu Haisu broke the visiting record for painters of different generations with his blending in the mountains from his first visit and his breakthrough in spirit at his tenth visit, and had the reflection as Shitao did: Mt. Huangshan is my teacher and I its friend; it gives me everything I expect deep in heart.
Mt. Huangshan has a boundless landscape under heaven on a magnificent scale with peaks being strange, rocks strange and pines even stranger, and with clouds flying, water flying and mountains flying as well. The forceful and graceful charm of the scenic resources of 1019 points on the whole unfolds an enormous long painting scroll, in which the motionless seems to be moving while the moving seems to be motionless, and endows the mountains eternal spirituality.
Mt. Huangshan endues us with many inspirations in long Chinese cultural history.
In 1979, Deng Xiaoping, the former leader of China, inspected Mt. Huangshan and publicized his famous "Huangshan Remarks", preluding the development of Chinese modern tourism. Accordingly, Mt. Huangshan, where the Welcoming Guest Pine, a treasure of China is cultivated, becomes a public image of Chinese tourism.
The culture makes a mountain distinctive, and the mountains are in harmony with human beings. Hand in hand, they make Mt. Huangshan a world cultural and natural heritage and a global geopark. As a double-heritage site, it reflects the beauty of Chinese landscape and carries the weight of Chinese civilization. In 1990, Mt. Huangshan was added to the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage by UNESCO as globally the 17th double-heritage site, and included in the first list of "World Geopark" in 2004.
W. Eder, the director of geology department and assistant general secretary of UNESCO, praised: On Lotus Peak I have found the heaven on the earth.
Brend. Von. Droste, the former director of World Heritage Center of UNESCO, signed: Mt. Huangshan, incredible with the great cultural significance, is the business card of China, and the outstanding delegate in Heritage Site. I am proud of her!
As former Chinese President Jiang Zemin praised it with "I try to describe with a dreamy brush the fantastic scenery of the sun shining red over distance of waves of clouds", Mt. Huangshan has got everything firstly ready to write a line in the splendid poem of sustainable development by the time when it is globally agreed upon that travelling is "human's highest and deepest wish".
Since the end of last century, Mt. Huangshan has successively won International Prize for the Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes by UNESCO, Destination Stewardship Award by World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and China Responsible Tourism Award by Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), and successfully implemented the System of Measures for Excellence in Destination (SMED) by the World Center of Excellence for Destinations (CED) and became the first world nature-based excellent destination.
In 2008, International Conference on Sustainable Tourism Management at World Heritage Sites was held by UNWTO and UNESCO, and concluded with the Huangshan Declaration. Since then, the Observatory on Sustainable Tourism Development at World Heritage Site– Mt. Huangshan was set up. In 2013, UNWTO summarized "Huangshan mode" and promote it on its working conference held at the headquarter of UNWTO.
Taleb Rifai, Deputy Secretary General of UNWTO, said that it is an unforgettable travelling experience. It is a sort of beauty beyond words. Huangshan's beauty is seen by whoever cherishes it through his hardwork and wisdom.

Huangshan is one of the most progressive models for sustainable destination management that I think globally is a model that should be represented. I do feel that HSAC and the work being done in Mt. Huangshan are incredible. It is a reading example globally without question".
